Preface by the Dean

Research forms an integral part of the activities of the faculty with the aim to be internationally competitive as well as locally relevant through innovative and relevant research in support of national and international initiatives.

The faculty was once again successful in obtaining collaboration of industry in many of its research projects. Contract research, NRF grants and THRIP funding to the value of more than R22 million made it possible to engage in research activities throughout the spectrum of engineering, the built environment and information technology. Main foci includes Environmental and Water Utilization Engineering, Low Cost Composites, Pattern Recognition, Bio Engineering, Computer Networks and Security, Life-cycle Engineering, Technology and Innovation Management, Minerals Processing and Hydrometallurgy, Physical Metallurgy and Corrosion, Design Optimisation, Surface Mine Transportation, Computational Intelligence, and Information for Development.

Initiatives to ensure that research results are reported in accredited journals paid dividends with a considerable increase in journal research outputs for 2002. A significant increase in graduate student numbers were achieved in 2002 which should provide a solid base for future research activities.
