Sustainability of health care interventions
Important and necessary health care interventions are continually being planned and carried out in developing countries. These interventions are usually funded by outside donors from the UN family, bilateral donors and NGDOs for a relatively short period: the expectation (and agreement) being that the host country will take over the running and funding of the programmes when the outside input comes to an end. There is increasing evidence however that such programmes are not being sustained. The current research is using the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control as a case study (this programme of the World Health Organisation supports onchocerciasis control projects in 18 African countries). The research involves developing and refining an instrument to evaluate the degree of sustainability of a project, so that the necessary remedial action can be taken in good time to ensure its eventual sustainability. Much of the content of the instrument is generic, which means that it is potentially applicable to other programmes
