Selected Highlights from Research Findings

Prof Eric Buch was assigned the task to prepare a document on health strategy for the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). The abridged version were adopted by the Heads of State at the African Union meeting in Durban, July 2002. The assignment has led to the development of an overarching health services development strategy for Africa The research project on the development of a participatory evaluation tool for AIDS Home Based Care has led to the development of a new model for the evaluation of Home Based Care by NGOs. It has the potential to be extended to the evaluation of other health services provided by NGOs The Council for Medical Schemes commissioned and published a policy report by Prof E Buch and Mrs E Wolvaardt on the Governance of Medical Schemes in South Africa. The study identified key areas that need to be addressed to enable Boards of Trustees to fulfil their governance role more effectively. The findings of the study on knowledge, attitudes and practices of BMW workers in relation to HIV/AIDS have been used to develop a focussed programme for the prevention and care of HIV/AIDS in the workplace. It is enjoying unique successes.
