Selected Highlights from Research Findings

The study on saving babies, a perinatal care survey of South Africa is constantly expanding with over 90 sites country-wide at present. We now have a description of perinatal mortality in South Africa. Avoidable factors have been identified in preparation for suitable interventions. A randomised trial of a carefully designed multi-media package for the implementation of kangaroo mother care (KMC) — with or without a facilitator — in 38 hospitals in Kwa-Zulu Natal, has shown that, in order to be effective, an on-site facilitator together with the package are needed; it is then far more effective than using the multi-media package alone. However, it is expensive and would need to be budgeted for in future. The study on Public-Private Partnership in Antenatal Care in Tembisa has developed a practical method of incorporating private general practitioners (GPs) into providing antenatal care for indigent patients in partnership with the public sector. This has resulted in earlier initiation of antenatal care and higher quality of care than is the case in standard public sector management.
