Selected Highlights from Research Findings

Critical Care Standards for the clinical practice were developed, and is currently being validated by another South African institution. These standards will form the basis for improvement and evaluation of quality of care in Critical Care practice.

The perceptions of street children on health was studied for the first time. This research will serve as a basis for the planning of health care for this vulnerable group of children.

The study on the experiences of mothers caring for their mentally retarded children in townships was the first study of this nature conducted in Namibia. Stigma was a prominent theme expressed by the participants. Support of any form or lack thereof seemed to be the decisive factor in positioning mothers along a continuum of two extremes, namely despairing isolation and that of integrated happiness.

Five studies have been completed on the accessibility of primary health care services in a variety of settings and expectations of clients, which can be addressed, were highlighted. A caring attitude from the service provider seems to be the one crucial element of care that can improve the accessibility of primary health care services.
