Selected Highlights from Research Findings

The publication Black Academics on the Move has generated interest from both academics and the media. The report explores the reasons why black academics move between higher education institutions or leave the academic profession. Contributing factors include institutional racism, racism couched as liberalism, racism in evaluation, racism as black essentialism, poor management as well as factors which have to do with responding to the new political environment. Strategies for retaining black professionals proposed in the book include some that have been suggested by the participants, some that are in place at certain universities, and some that have been used in other contexts. Any strategy, when implemented, should encourage black and white academics to work closely together; white academics should not be caused to feel excluded.
