The ecology, ethology, physiology and evolution of African animals; Behavioural, physiological and evolutionary ecology; and Antarctic biology

Comparative studies involving population biology, behavioural ecology, reproductive biology, environmental endocrinology, ecophysiology, genetics and evolution of selected animal species. Endeavours in these areas provide fundamental data, as well as information essential to utilisation, conservation and sustainable development. Research on reproduction, predation, life-history characteristics, communication, behavioural ecology and eusociality. Research concerning the effects of environmental change on the terrestrial and marine faunas of the sub-Antarctic islands and Antarctica is undertaken in collaboration with the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism
