Development of new research infrastructure in the form of a new building and the renovation of an existing building was initiated. The new building will house an extension of the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute and the newly developed Bioinformatics Unit. The facilities will include new laboratories and growth chambers for the Plant Biotechnology initiative, and a new set of quarantine greenhouses for use with GM pants. The renovated Agricultural Sciences Library will house the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development while the library will be incorporated into main facilities of the Academic Information Services.
The recruitment of additional postgraduate students is required in order to maintain a vibrant research environment, to this end a number of new research programmes were established and funding for them secured -The GENSEC chair in Financial Mathematics, a number of Mellon Foundation mentoring awards, .
The quality of research performed by our staff was recognized by the award of a Chancellor’s Awards for Research to a member of the Faculty, an outstanding young researcher award and the recognition of a group of our best academics as outstanding academic achievers. The international standing of our researchers has also been acknowledged by the appointment of Prof Rashid Hassan as a staff associate in the International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. He is also a member of the science panel and co-chair of a working group of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, which involves more than 1 000 leading scientists in the world.
