Selected Highlights from Research Findings

The Gender Audit of Kgatelopele Initiative in North West Province commissioned by the Royal Netherlands Embassy recommended the establishment of a gender equity directorate that would focus on training, monotoring and evaluation of programmes. This would avoid gender issues being regarded as an 'add-on activity'. The directorate would promote inter-sectorial and inter-departmental collaboration. Second, the report recommended formulation of gender-related policy that would effect change in education and organisational culture. Third, it recommended continuous training rather than the 'once-off' strategies. Fourth, it suggested that for any gender sensitive programme, there should be strong leadership and commitment. Finally, it recommended that educational materials should be reviewed to ensure that textbooks and educational resources are gender sensitive with regard to language, images and examples.

The efficacy of administrator preparation programmes (APPs) in South Africa in preparing school principals for present and future challenges was explored. Among other things, the findings indicate that although APPs in KwaZulu-Natal have made a serious attempt to prepare school principals for the new democratic conditions in schools, these programmes do not adequately meet the needs. There is a definite need to redesign these programmes and ensure that they address the needs of schools and principals.
