Selected Highlights from Research Findings
Research on the oral health of children in South Africa was conducted in association with the national Department of Health and oral health sections in the various provinces. It was found that although the prevalence and severity of dental caries in South Africa are classified as low in terms of the World Health Organisation's classification, more than 80 percent of all dental caries in children under the age of 15 in South Africa go untreated. The highest prevalence of dental caries in South Africa was recorded in the Western Cape Province while the Limpopo Province consistently showed the lowest prevalence of dental caries for all age groups in South Africa. Analysis of dental caries for 12-year old children in South Africa over a period of 20 years (1982-2001) showed a reduction in severity of 58,5%.
