Selected Highlights from Research Findings

Several important milestones originated from the Department's tuberculosis and inflammation research programmes in 2003. These include: the generation of potassium transport knockout mutants of Mycrobacterium tuberculosis for drug/ vaccine research in tuberculosis; the observation that transition metals that are present in the workplace and environment catalyse the reactivity of toxic/ caranogenic reactive oxidants produced by the cells of the human immune system – this presents a novel mechanism of environmental and occupational inflammatory diseases of the airways and cardiovascular system; and itraconazole, a widely-used anti-mycotic, is a potent antagonist of the stone-operated influx of calcium into immune and inflammatory cells, which represent a novel pharmacological strategy for the control of harmful inflammatory responses.
