Selected Highlights from Research Findings
Research on patients suffering from schizophrenia and the dissemination of information regarding this illness was conducted among Sotho speaking patients and their families at the Weskoppies Hospital in Pretoria. The majority of patients had never been informed of the diagnoses. Apart from being unfamiliar with the term, results showed that various misconceptions regarding the disorder exist among patients and their friends and families. This ignorance reinforced misunderstanding and stigmatisation leading to numerous social problems for the patients. The research also showed that a proper knowledge of the concerned community should be obtained before any communication takes place.
