Selected Highlights from Research Findings

Research was undertaken into short-term weather forecasting techniques for heavy rainfall over southern Africa. Large, synoptic scale systems as well as mesoscale systems, such as severe thunderstorms, were investigated. All forecasting techniques were verified using rain gauge, satellite and radar rainfall data. These forecasting techniques were implemented and are used operationally at the South African Weather Service.

Late Quaternary sediments of presently ephemeral river catchments in southern Namibia were investigated. The type and structure of the sediments indicates that their deposition took place under palaeoenvironmental conditions characterized by higher overall humidity, less pronounced seasonality of rainfall and higher geomorphic stability of the catchment area.
