Selected Highlights from Research Findings
In 2003, an active integrated inductor was designed for usage in high-frequency integrated circuits (Ics). A software tool for generic active inductor was also developed. The research was continued in 2004, and the active inductor was improved and deployed in a fractional-N frequency synthesizer. The figure shows the layout of the complete frequency synthesizer as completed by Jannes Venter, one of our students. This research stems from the desire of having a completely integrated single-chip transceiver. Single-chip integration has several components, amongst others, the need for a frequency synthesizer - and this is where the subsystem fits in.
