Selected Highlights from Research Findings
This study, a first of its kind in South Africa, established a clustering of adolescents' poor oral health with other health risk behaviours such as smoking and snuff use. The adolescents' sense of coherence, which is a measure of ability to cope with life stressors, was established as a common determinant factor for health risk behaviours. This finding therefore suggests the adoption of a universal, integrated prevention approach, such as life skills training, to improve adolescents' oral health and prevent other problem behaviours.
