Selected Highlights from Research Findings

Class 1 integrons occur randomly in nosocomial bacterial isolates and have been associated with resistance against antimicrobials and disinfectants. Research conducted in the Department of Medical Microbiology has indicated that the genetic structure is relatively stable for genetic mutations during short term selective antimicrobial pressure in vitro. From this study it can be concluded that short courses of antibiotics at the required dosages do not contribute to genetic mutations and increasing antimicrobial resistance.
