Selected Highlights from Research Findings

Researchers identified two chromosomal subregions that make individuals more susceptible to schizophrenia: one on the short arm of chromosome 1 (1p) and the other on the long arm of chromosome 13 (13q). This is also the first time that an isodiosomy was described on chromosome 1 for schizophrenia. It is the rare condition where an individual inherits two copies of a specific chromosome from one parent, and no copy from the other parent. This finding will facilitate the search for specific gene markers on chromosome 1 that relate to schizophrenia.
