Selected Highlights from Research Findings

Research was completed into four topics: - The enormous contribution made by the late Prof Leo Quayle to the musical life - especially music theatre - of South Africa was investigated, substantiated and annotated. - It was ascertained that the events that occurred - both musical and political - before and during the famous 1962 visit to South Africa by the world-renowned composer Igor Stravinsky proved contentious for both himself and the SABC. - An investigation into the Unisa commissioned compositions for wind instruments by Stefans Grové, pointed out their importance as a link to his on-going ‘Music from Africa’ series. - A study, and historical perspective, of flute music down the ages that might have been inspired by birds, noted the strong and continuous influence that birds and birdsong have had on composers of flute music.
