Preface by the Dean
The Faculty was assessed by an international panel during October 2004. The comprehensive assessment comprised an evaluation of academic programmes, research, community service, student affairs and faculty management. Recommendations from the final report will be addressed in the Faculty’s strategic planning process.
In 2004 the Centre for Human Rights continued its focus on research in the Centre’s area of specialisation, namely human rights law in Africa. Research was carried out and published on the national HIV/AIDS policies, strategic frameworks, legislation, guidelines and court cases of eight SADC countries together with the Centre for the Study of AIDS.
The Faculty's law journal, De Jure, published by LexisNexis Butterworths, remains a leading journal that draws contributions from national and international academics.
Our students have a long-standing tradition of excellent performance in international moot court competitions: the 13th Annual African Human Rights Moot Court Competition was held in Dar es Salaam in August 2004. The University of Pretoria and Université Abomey Calavi, Bénin merged to form a combined team and win the competition. Preparation involves extensive research and participants receive accreditation for the subject Moot Court 420.
