Cell signaling: Cellular response to adrenergic signals during protein energy malnutrition (PEM)

There is an increase in the production and release of catecholamines at least during some periods of PEM. This increase in sympathetic activity or 'emergency-response' has deleterious effects on the body's immune system and may partly explain the increased vulnerability to infection in children with PEM
